Volkswagen Crafter Double Cab

The Crafter Double Cab provides seating for up to seven people, compared with up to three in the single cab versions.

Volkswagen lists the Double Cab in two lengths. The medium wheelbase version measures 5,996 mm, while the long wheelbase version measures 6,846 mm. That gives operators a choice when matching the vehicle to the size and type of body their operation requires.

For a large commercial vehicle, manoeuvrability and driver support can help make demanding working environments easier to manage. The Crafter chassis includes a range of assistance and safety technology designed to support the driver in traffic and when manoeuvring.

Front Assist with City Emergency Braking monitors vehicles ahead as well as pedestrians and cyclists, preparing or applying the brakes when necessary. Parking support options include Park Assist and Rear Traffic Alert, while electromechanical Servotronic steering is fitted as standard.

A commercial vehicle needs to fit the work it is expected to perform. The Crafter chassis has been developed as a base for customised bodies, with Volkswagen highlighting applications including tippers, refrigerated vehicles and tow trucks.

Volkswagen-approved converters can also develop the chassis into a more specialised vehicle. Where a body requires additional electrical power or cooling, extra electric generators or air-conditioning compressors can be incorporated. A customer-specific function control unit can also be used where smartphone control of body functions is required.

Different applications place different demands on a commercial vehicle, so having a suitable drive configuration can make a significant difference to day-to-day operation. The Crafter chassis range offers front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

Front-wheel drive provides a lower loading sill, while rear-wheel drive is designed to handle heavier trailer loads and offers towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes. For more difficult surfaces, Volkswagen positions 4MOTION around improved traction and directional stability.

An optional eight-speed automatic gearbox can also be combined with all three drive systems, supporting a more comfortable drive during frequent stop-start work.

The Crafter provides a range of seating options, including optional comfort and suspension seats designed to provide greater adjustment and support.

The cab also includes practical storage for everyday working items, with compartments for tools, files, bottles and other equipment. USB-C charging ports, Bluetooth connectivity and 12 V sockets help drivers keep mobile devices connected and powered while they are away from base.
